High School Seniors Reach for the Stars at Aviation Career Event

VAN NUYS, CA – 05/06/11 – More than 1,200 seniors from more than 20 local high schools met face-to-face with aviation and aerospace professionals to gain insight into a vast array of educational programs and career options at the recent 6th Annual Aviation Career Day at Van Nuys Airport.

Hosted by Syncro Aviation, Van Nuys Airport and The Valley Economic Alliance, the unique free event has tripled in size over the past several years and is one of the largest of its kind in the country.

The event was the brainchild of Los Angeles City Councilman Tony Cardenas and featured airport tours, displays of both military and commercial aircraft and more than 40 interactive exhibits.

“We decided to create this event to encourage our young people to see what opportunities they have to choose from that can utilize both their talents and their aspirations,” he said. “Its been very exciting to see the response and know that we’re having a positive impact on their lives.”

Arleta High School sent 25 students to the event. “The kids are really inspired and ready to soak it all up. They’re very excited,” said Jessica Vega, a school counselor who accompanied the school group.

One exhibitor was TWC Aviation, a company specializing in aircraft management, sales and acquisitions, chartering, maintenance and consulting services. The company has participated in the event for the last four years.

“What’s exciting is seeing the enthusiasm of the kids,” said Scott Cutshall, TWC Aviation’s vice president of marketing. “We talk with them about the variety of options in the field, from maintenance and accounting to sales and actual flight operations. We want them to know that there are many, many opportunities in aviation that go beyond just sitting in the pilot’s seat.”

The event, said Ron Wood, president and CEO of The Valley Economic Alliance and a private pilot himself, “provides a grand opportunity to share what goes on at the airport with a whole new generation of energetic and motivated young people. I’ve been involved in aviation for a number of years and this really puts a smile on my face.”
