Southern California Gas Co.Chatsworth Business Receives Energy Efficiency Project Of The Year SoCalGas Recognizes Rexam Beverage Can Co. For Its Sustainability Efforts

LOS ANGELES, May 10, 2011 – Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) presented its Energy Efficiency Project of the Year Award to Rexam Beverage Can Co. of Chatsworth, Calif., for its commitment to furthering energy efficiency and lowering greenhouse gas emissions.

The award was presented at SoCalGas’ 6th Annual Energy Efficiency Expo in Downey, Calif. before 300 local business owners and representatives.

“We’re honored to present this award to a customer who has saved more than 460,000 therms last year – more than any other customer in our service territory,” said Hal D. Snyder, vice president of customer solutions for SoCalGas. “They’ve discovered that saving energy is more than just a business goal – it’s a benefit to all of us – and we believe it’s worthy of recognition.”

The award honors Rexam Beverage Can Co. for identifying and implementing specific energy-saving opportunities related to a new regenerative thermal oxidizer system. The technology has the ability to use internal heat generated by the burning of air contaminants, such as volatile organic compounds, to help reduce natural gas consumption and combustion emissions, including greenhouse gases.

The Rexam Beverage Can Co. plant operates three aluminum can lines for the soft drink and beer industries.  Production occurs at the plant, 24 hours a day, and seven days per week.

“We’ve reduced our natural gas usage by 45 percent since we’ve upgraded our system,” said Dave Darnbrough, plant manager at Rexam Beverage Can Co.  “SoCalGas made every effort to help us strengthen our sustainability position by providing us the services and incentives that have strengthened our business – and we thank them for that.”

Rexam Beverage Can Co. also received an incentive from SoCalGas for its leadership in energy efficiency. SoCalGas’ incentives cover many types of natural gas equipment, as well as energy-saving projects. The incentives are based on the amount of natural gas saved, and they often reach several thousands of dollars per project.
